The Jolly Boys trip to Geneva was actually a grand rail tour of Europe (or part of it at least) taking in Nice, Genoa, Milan and Geneva.
Geneva is dominated by the lake which bears its name and not surprisingly most attractions are either based around or on the lake.
We didn't have time to take a cruise on the lake but given more time would probably have done so, nevertheless there is still a lot to see and do.
Switzerland is renowned for its cleanliness and high prices, Geneva is no exception to this rule. However, its geographical location, right on the border with France, gives the opportunity to stay in France at a much cheaper rate and to "commute" to Geneva for sightseeing during the day.
Details of the first part of this trip can be found on the Genoa page.
Travel
Genoa - Milan with Italian Railways
This is a very busy route and our train had no spare seats. We did have seat reservations but, even so, found it an uncomfortable journey.
A couple of hours in Milan afforded us time to recover and obtain some "essential supplies" (see picture above) for the rest of our journey.
Milan - Geneva with Swiss National Railways
With typical Swiss efficiency this train was spotlessly clean and ran perfectly to time. The scenery on this journey is simply stunning passing through mountains and alongside lakes.
Geneva - Liverpool with Easyjet
Not much to report about this leg of the journey. However don't forget, Switzerland is not in the EU and so Duty-Free shopping is available!
Accommodation
Campanile Geneve, Ferney-Voltaire, France
Just over the border in France, this hotel is fairly basic but offers reasonable facilities at a much cheaper rate than it is possible to get in Switzerland. It's a short taxi ride to the airport, either for departing or for getting the train into Geneva
