Tavira

A Jolly Boys favourite.

Our Opinion

Tavira is our most-visited destination and is a firm favourite. It's quieter laid-back atmosphere together with a large number of small cafes, bars and restaurants appeal to us.

Manchester or Liverpool - Faro with Easyjet or Jet2
We prefer to travel from Liverpool, the whole airport experience is far nicer.

Accommodation

We stay at many different locations in Tavira

Hotel Princesa do Gilao, Tavira
Situated right in the river in the centre of town this is an excellent base for exploring Tavira. The rooms range from farly basic to superb suites with a river view but all are maintained well and kept spotlessly clean.
Maria Nova Hotel
Situated at the top of a steep hill close to the centre of town this is a modern hotel with good amenities. The swimming pool and roof-top bar are to be recommended. The rooms are well appointed and are kept clean.
Hotel Vila Gale Tavira
Situated slightly further away from the centre f town near the new market, this is also a modern hotel with good amenities. The swimming pool is large and bracing but the bar is, in our opinion, a bit of a let-down. The rooms are also well appointed and are kept clean.

We have also stayed at a local apartment which was superb.

Recommendations
Snack Bar & Pastelaria Alagoa
Located in a small square behind the Roman bridge this cafe has become our "local" in Tavira our trip. We found the service good and the quality of food and drink also excellent.
The Black Anchor
An Irish bar (or so it claims to be although it's far more than that) situated on the banks of the river. Look out for entertainment from Gary Vesey!
Artefact
A new experience for us in 2024. We thought this was a fantastic restaurant. The only drawback - you need to book really early, 8 weeks in advance is not unusual.
