This was our second visit to Tavira in 2016 and was, as ever, most enjoyable.
Tavira is now becoming the Jolly Boys second home. We are now treated like friends at many of the restaurants and bars.
As ever we were looked after by our friend Lina to who we are very grateful.
As before, we also took a day trip along the coast to the border town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio which takes some time to explore fully. Moving away from the main square provides a better selection of bars and places to eat.
Travel
Manchester - Faro with Monarch
Good flights with no complaints in either direction.
Accommodation
Hotel Princesa do Gilao, Tavira
Situated right in the river in the centre of town this is an excellent base for exploring Tavira. The rooms range from farly basic to superb suites with a river view but all are maintained well and kept spotlessly clean.
Recommendations
Restaurante Brisa do Rio
Since or precious report this restaurant has moved and is now situated near the Roman bridge on
R. Joao Vaz Corte Real. The standard of food hasn't changed though. It is superb with the Portuguese steak being a firm favourite. The special dish of roast lamb that we tried on this visit was hailed as the best ever lamb dish tasted by two of our number!
The Black Anchor
An Irish bar (or so it claims to be although it's far more than that) situated on the banks of the river. We always look forward to being looked after by Lina and can help and keep coming back for more!
Snack Bar & Pastelaria Alagoa
Located in a small square behind the Roman bridge this cafe has become our "local" in Tavira our trip. We found the service good and the quality of food and drink also excellent.
