Barcelona

Barcelona is hailed as the great sightseeing city of Spain.

Our Opinion

There's the buildings featuring the architecture of Gaudi, the Ramblas and, for those who like that sort of thing (like our guest 4th Jolly Boy), the Nou Camp football stadium to name but a few.
And with all that to see and do we were somewhat underwhelmed - yes it's all there but the entire focus seemed to us to be on the tourism aspect of things, almost turning things into a city-wide theme park.
Nevertheless it would be wrong to say we had a bad time. It is certainly worth seeing La Sagrada Familia and taking a wander down the Ramblas.
Because it is a major tourist venue, Barcelona is not a cheap place to either eat or drink although, as ever, moving slightly off the beaten track can lower prices considerably.

Further Details

Travel
Liverpool - Barcelona with Easyjet
A good flight with reasonable service from the orange anorak-clad crew.
Barcelona - Sitges with Spanish Railways
To get out of the clamour of Barcelona it's worth taking the train to the seaside resort of Sitges.
Sitges is quite a pleasant town which has, of recent times, become the gay capital of Spain.

Accommodation
Derby Hotel, Barcelona
A good hotel located close to the main railway station and about a 20 minute walk away from the Ramblas.
Rooms were small but clean with adequate facilities.
The hotel bar was well stocked but we can't comment on the restaurant because we didn't use it
